Credit card secured by Green Dot helps credit-sick consumers - FinTech Funutures
In order to help consumer credit histories or enhance their credit standing, Green Dot Corp. introduced the Green Dot Platinum Visa Secured Credit Card on September 29. As this is a secured credit card, the credit line is secured by the cardholder's bond with Green Dot Bank. Since Green Dot passes on customers' payments to the three large credit bureaux, clients can enhance their payments through the use of cards in a socially accountable manner.
It also allows customers to pre-qualify without compromising their creditworthiness and provides free on-line bank accounts. A brief request is filled in by users to see if they are eligible for the card. Once Green Dot is authorized, it informs the user of his credit line of up to $1,000 and sends the card to his home.
Card holders can make their deposits in the form of money at any of the 1,000,000 Green Dot's sites, with Walmart, 7-Eleven, Walgreens, CVS and Dollar General Store included. There is a $200 margin requirement and the cardholder's credit line is the same as the amount of the initial investment. Clients can make their montly payment at a retailer site or with Green Dot's free on-line invoice payment.
This card has an annuity of $39 and 19.99 per cent a year. This new Green Dot card is not the first attempt by a pre-paid card company to close the gulf between the use of GPR pre-paid cards and the establishment or improvement of creditworthiness for customers. In 2014, for example, the U.S. Treasury and Banking Up, a New York City-based GPR card company formerly known as Plastyc, began work on an on-going research and development program to see if the provision of a pre-paid card and a secured credit card to customers could enhance credit availability.
Suze Orman, the TV attorney for individual finance responsibilities, also assisted in the creation of The Approved Card, a Mastercard-labeled GPR pre-paid card that no longer exists. Mr Orman had worked with credit bureaux to see whether the cardholder's behaviour on the authorised card could help the consumer to obtain credit.
