Equifax, Australia's biggest credit reference bureau for Australian customers, misled Australian customers into saying: "Your credit reference packs will only receive one lump sum fee - auto renewal means your customers will still be debited if they don't sign out. Malpractice prompted customers to purchase credit reference service when they were not needed or were already eligible for free use under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
Equifax has made further confessions of inadequacy to three particularly sensitive users. Equifax has also pledged to implement a 180-day reimbursement and legal remedy system for customers in excess of the $3.5 million sanction. It follows the Financial Services Royal Commission's interim report on similar accusations of malpractice in the financial services industry and comes at a challenging juncture for Equifax, whose UK subsidiary Equifax Ltd. has just been fined 500,000 by the UK Department of Homeland Security for a 2017 intrusion.

As the Daily Telegraph has announced, the US agent stores the private information of 44 million British people. In such cases, it is not necessary to notify us under applicable UK privacy legislation. Equifax said in a release of infringement disclosures last Thursday that criminals had disclosed the personally identifiable information of 143 million U.S. clients who were missing between mid-May and the end of July this year after using an (unspecified) "web applications vulnerability".
Sector talks this week-end indicated that a recent bug in Apache Struts may have been hacked by a hacker, but this was rejected by the Apache Software Foundation this morning, as previously announced.
