A recent EZV poll, "Understanding UK adult UK finance lives", found that 9% of UK adult consumers had refused a UK adult in the last 2 years. Of them, 49% were not able to get the products they needed and 51% associated the decrease with their creditworthiness. A further 19% were deterred from requesting a credit item because they thought their request would be refused.

Those stats support our own results from our workplace and endangered group adults allowance training sessions. Participants in our training often emphasize credit score as one of the second most important issues after credit management. It is often not really the creditworthiness that causes them distress, it is a shortage of comprehension.

You often tell us that the legends and false information about lending also make it hard to get under your thumb. Since 24% of the adult population have little or no trust in the management of their money*, the complexities of credit management contribute adversely to their overall well being. It is laudable that many credit bureaus and creditors have started to offer consumer assistance in controlling and administering their credit files.

However, when an individual finds it difficult to handle cash and credit or is denied digital access, the information available is still quite frightening. Information is also often only available on line and after registration for a free or prepaid item. Information provided often concentrates on a company's own creditworthiness, which is often confused by the consumer with the creditworthiness with which their institution can accept or reject their request.

Often this leads to more confusing situations, in particular when information is obtained by the consumer from different origins. Individuals with abnormally low pecuniary performance, often the most at risk, can end up depending on imprecise information or making bad business choices. You are also more prone to feel pressured into making choices that result from policies used by some creditors to market their wares.

Our call is for creditors, credit bureaus, employer and social groups to work with us to give us clear, easily understandable information and help our work to help those who need a little extra help that they cannot get from a website or booklet.
