Postponement of the course of study occurs when a learner is prevented from commencing or completing a term or academic year due to conditions beyond the learner's reasonable control. If, for example, a learner is not able to take his or her course or course and/or to take part in the evaluation and cannot register for the next evaluation point, this will be regarded as a possible postponement of the course.

Possible reasons for a postponement must be the same as those for the reduction and include: bodily or psychological wellbeing, serious economic problems, emotion and personality problems, e.g. grief, invalidity, i.e. in case the student's disabilities occur for the first moment during the evaluation; inevitable absenteeism from the university, e.g. employer's demands; inevitable absenteeism from the place of residence, e.g. evacuation; lost immigrant visa rights; other serious conditions not foreseeable by the students.

Stage 4 students may postpone their course of studying, but in most cases their visas will be shortened and the students will have to go back to their home countries. In order for the students to be able to return to the United Kingdom to complete their course of higher education, a new type of visas must be applied for. Students can postpone up to a time limit of two years, depending on the duration of the enrolment, the level 4 funding and/or the professional, legislative and regulatory needs.

If a student has to postpone his or her course of studies for more than two years, he or she will be retired and, if necessary, paid a withdrawal supplement. Applicants can submit an application to APEL/APCL to resume the course. Undergraduates registering for professional, legal and regulatory classes should follow their own course guidelines.

Forms are sent to the course administrators for editing and transmission to the Students Record and Data Team. Students who are not able to come back later must inform their teacher. Leaving a student's course of education means that he or she takes a break from studying in order to re-enter at the next available occasion.

Although postponed, for most reasons a learner is still regarded as a learner of the university, but the financing of credits is usually not possible during the postponement period. Giving up a student's degree means that he finishes his degree entirely with no intent to return at a later date.
