The breathtaking new office buildings of KPOP illuminate the way to Detroit.

When you think you know what's going on in Detroit, basing on the tales of the city's finacial problems and images of some disintegrating edifices, it's definitely rewarding to pay a call to the desks of KPOP, the two-month-old designer originating in the creation of the award-winning Quicken Loans and its corporate home offi ces.

Located in the lower level of a long extinct Detroit bench, the Detroit designer's room represents what Motor City is all about - being hard but gifted; brave and exhilarating; having a good time with a funny Twist. Like they don't give a damn what you think - and that might just be real.

Her own bureaus and those she has set up for the 11,000 operatives transferred from remote suburbs to central Detroit are brave, light and comical. dPOP's headquarters in the cellar of a former Detroit bench could be the most cool department in the worl, not because it has rollers, muddy machinery and cap'n crunch muesli for its staff, but because the staff actually look like they're having such a good time that such an artificial gap doesn't seem to be made.

Starting out as a mix of the Quicken Loans and Business Facility Shopping and Facility teams, it has outsourced and served every client who wants to find their own local cultural identity, reflecting it in their premises and amenities. While not everyone will be following the example of DPPOP and have a topic that uses a bench safe as a meeting room, a rest room that looks like the inside of a dropping Hersey kiss, and a full-fledged horses light with iris legwarmers (though they might be supposed to), Chief Executive Officer Melissa Price said that the agency wants to help its customers find out who they are and stand in for that in their office.

Andrew Lemanek is the crazy scholar behind dPOP's headquarters in the lower level of the Chrysler House Buildings. Chrysler House began its existence as a dime bank in 1910, but like many Detroit properties, it went through difficult periods before being claimed back by Bedrock, the property developer by Dan Gilbert, the business man who is president and founding director of Rock Financial and Quicken Loans (and owners of the NBA Cleveland Cavaliers).

Whilst others avoid Detroit, the bedrock is upwardly facing the town, grabbing land and breathe new air into it. Initially, the realm of FPOPs seems somewhat incomplete. A staircase leading to a metallic ship's harbour takes the visitor to entry aPOP. There is a flickering (deliberate) D-POP tag on the walls and the visitor has to turn on to type the passwords and give them to the supporters of the business on the community every dawn (the passwords were "miau" on the date of my visit).

One of the main features of the front of the offices is an adorned winding flight of stairs that lead nowhere. Some of the most inspirational pieces of studio cabinetry are made to measure, such as a sitting and spinning desk and a desk that actually works, desks inlaid with the bench's elaborate security door, yin and yang desks that can be extended, and an Auditorium made of recycled Detroit timber.

It will be used for "design tastings" where representatives of the sector will present new creations to engineers from ePOP. Offices also feature a mix of Herman Miller Embody seats (more on this later), height-adjustable desk tops and Allsteel Clarity seats in some laid-back environments. At the front of the bureau there are two "labelled" items that are tested by KPOP for shelf life and appearance - a unit and usually a fabric or rug pattern.

Prior to the appearance of HPOP, the designers set out on the daunting mission of bringing 11,000 blue-collar artists to Detroit's inner city, especially in deserted or dilapidated areas. Pricey said that she and her crew acquired a lot of trial expertise. Whilst the Quicken Loan rooms are not nearly as moody as the dPOP's, the gameiness of the business, from the bookkeeping staff to the IT division, is evident.

The Quicken Loan staff are dispersed around town. Due to the increase in Quicken Loans, the designer must be able to extract the wall and substitute workplaces. In contrast to some moving partitions, Quicken Loans Facilities Site Leader Tedd Tice said they are the reuse of DIRTTT partitions. I could blast this place out over night and move it to another place in the building," he said.

Quicken Loans' Detroit center is located in the Compuware Building, one of the first buildings in the city' historic area. It' home to Bedrock and the leadership group. It has a large-scale Detroit city centre modelling so managers can strategically plan how to extend their coverage in the marketplace.

There is a half pitch in Cleveland Cavalier's colours for the use of the teams in this area. Looking only at the Quicken Loan in Detroit update, a user may have never known the city's issues. But, a few block away from the company's nucleus, it's not hard to see the plague that still afflicts Detroit.

There'?s no question, it gets better, but Detroit still has a long way to go. But if Detroit is a moribund town, you wouldn't recognize it by the atmosphere in the building block that houses Quicken Loans and its subsidiaries. Most of the inner cities houses have outside loudspeakers linked to an apartment named Rockbot, a municipal juice box that allows users of the apartment to select songs to play throughout the area.

The Martius Park campus, which is the centre of all Quicken Loans activities, has a sun terrace in summers and free time skates in winters. In other words, the town that gave the car to the whole planet but forfeited its own path is re-inventing itself, an empty screen on which designs are being introduced.

The good days for the automotive sector in Detroit make the people who are living there forget about the recession. However, if DPPOP and Quicken Loans are any reference to the will to move forward in this much slandered town, Detroit's futures are promising. Established in 1979 to produce and distribute a nationwide newsletters, the business has become the premier resource for inside perspectives on job creation and engineering.
