Cccs? What is Cccs?

The Birmingham CCCS - University of Birmingham Richard Hoggart gave his introductory talk in 1962, following his nomination as Professor of English at the University of Birmingham, announcing his intent to explore "mass culture". Hoggart established the Birmingham Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies two years later. Directed first by Hoggart and then by Stuart Hall and Richard Johnson and with the engagement of Michael Green, the Centre worked at the interfaces of literature critique, social science, historical studies and anthropology. 2.

Instead of concentrating on "high culture", group research should be carried out in areas of pop cultural interest such as charts, TV shows and commercials. Focusing on the "contemporary" in Birmingham, Great Britain and later around the globe, the Centre's approach has been coupled with an exploration of the critique of thought often brought by the continents.

Applying these theory to today's societies has been vigorously discussed in working groups on a daily basis. On the occasion of the Centre's fiftieth birthday, this initiative attempted to verify its importance. How was the centre related to its theme "contemporary"? And what was - and is - the wider policy meaning of the Centre?

This CCCS project aims to provide an answer to these frequently asked question, to convey the importance of the Centre's work to as wide an audiences as possible, and to address the topics that concern CCCS employees and undergraduates.
