What are the ways to collect Star Alliance mileage with UK credit card?
So if you've been following our line of British credit card evaluations over the last few week's, we're now at "M" in the literacy. Next item deals with the new Miles & More loyalty card recently introduced with Diners Club and Mastercard. Another important shift has occurred in the way Star Alliance credit card companies earn money in the UK.
Marriott Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest merge to create new airlines that you can reach through the Starwood Preferred Guest American Express card. As a result of these two evolutions, I wanted to look again at what the British Star Alliance credit card is all about, as accessing earnings through a credit or debit card is often a crucial element in the choice of program.
In the days of British Midland it was much simpler to travel around the globe in air mileage. British-airways was a key member of the Onworld coalition, and British Midland was part of the Star group. Better still, both systems permitted one-way withdrawals, so it was simple to blend and combine. mi also had an incredibly inexpensive payback schedule since they primarily accepted as a short-haul carrier that no one would be able to manage high netting.
It is harder to keep a Star Alliance account now that there is no longer a Star Alliance account. For me, one of the most important factors in participating in a frequent flyer program is the opportunity to collect frequent flyer and credit card points. There' often a handsome sign-up reward, and if you make money on a credit card, you can top up your account as your flight decreases.
Credit card is also a good way to "add" a miles program that you want to give up after a final use. Below is a full listing of Star Alliance affiliates and their credit card earnings options if you are living in the UK.
Lufthansa's only British card that allows you to collect Star Alliance mileage directly is the Lufthansa MobileCard. Diners Club and Mastercard dual package with an £79 per annum membership card, not a credit card, and you must pay your credit at the end of each monthly period.
Revenue rates are staggering at 1.25 million points per £1. A 10,000 mile sign-up reward is available until December 31, 2018. The following Star members will allow you to earn Gold or Amex Rewards with an American Express Platinum or American Express Preferred Rewards card and convert your Member Rewards points into mileage.
There are currently large sign-up discounts available for these maps - see 'Credit Card Update'. American Express Preferred Rewards Gold credit card currently has a 20,000 point sign-up credit, giving you 20,000 mile with SAS or Singapore Airlines. 6 per cent floating, up to and incl. annuity charge (free in year 1), calculated on a fictitious credit line of £1,200.
American Express Platinum Charges Card currently has a 30,000 point sign-up credit, giving you 30,000 mileage with SAS or Singapore Airlines. There are three versions of the free Amex Rewards Credit Card, one of which has a 10,000 point reward - bringing you 10,000 mileage with SAS or Singapore Airlines.
Now you can exchange SPG / Marriott points for 40 airline companies. Nominal transmission ratio is 3:1, with the credit card making 3 points per 1, but increasing to 3:1. SPG American Express card has a 30,000 point sign-up credit. That means you would earn 10,000 mile in most of the systems below.
You can find my detailled overview of the SPG American Express card here. 2 per cent floating, which includes a fictitious credit line of £1200. The Star Alliance members who are Marriott / SPG Airlines partner and thus collect mileage with the Starwood Preferred Guest American Express card. Displayed earnings ratios disregard the 25% discount if you redeem 60,000 points (20,000 miles) at once.
Other than SPG, the other UK hotels tickets provide poor earning opportunities for transfers to Star Alliance carriers. Rewards IHG Club Credit Card - Earning a poor 0.2 mile per 1 of credit card spending, although if you have the IHG Rewards Club Premium Credit Card, this will double to a more sensible 0.4 mile per 1 pound:
ANA, Asiana Airlines, Copa, ANA, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, TAP Air Portugal, Thai Airways, Thai Airways, United, Air China, Air China, Air New Zealand (400 = 1 Punkt), United. If you want Singapore Airlines mileage, HSBC Premier is also an optional part. There is an outstanding Visa / Mastercard ratio (0.5 mile per 1 on the free card, twice on the card you pay for).
For those who wish to collect Star Alliance mileage with a credit card, there are many ways to do so. So far as I can see, the only members without earnings are Egyptair, Ethiopian and EVA Air. Air China's PheonixMiles program is used by Shenzhen Airlines. Amex Gold free (first year) card is your best option if you want SAS or Singapore Airlines mileage.
If you have many non-US Express editions and therefore cannot fully use SPG American Express, the optional Mastercard (£79 per annum) and Online Traveller Diners Club are also a good choice. Collecting 1.25 points per 1 on this new card does not mean that you should choose your own card for your time.
A business class Star Alliance service from the UK to the Middle East, for example, will require 70,000 frequent flyer mileage, but only 50,000 Singapore Airlines mileage. It would be better for anyone who flies a great deal to Dubai to earn 1 Singapore Airlines 1 Pound per Pound via Amex Gold than to earn 1.25 Lufthansa 2 000 Tickets & More Points per Pound on the Global Traveller Card.
Except for SAS or Singapore Airlines, where Amex Gold is preferred because of the free first year, the 75 SPG American Express is my preferred one. Starwood Amex has a number of affiliates with a fair exchange ratio of 1.25 mile per 1 (assuming you are converting to 20,000 points) and may be a good way to secure your wagers on which Star program you wish to use.
